"The People"
This man was making a large basket for his home. Many of the women we had seen on the roads, and trails would have baskets on there heads filled to the brim with stuff. The areas we traveled trough were very primitive. Most the houses that we saw had straw roofs, and dirt floors. Only the better houses near Da Nang had cement floors, with a occassional rug. Everything was hand made, usually by the owner.
This is "Nen", a lady we befriended during our tour. Anytime we were near the Da Nang area we would stop by to say hello. Her husband was off fighting up north against the North Vietnamese, and Nen was left with her kids.
Nen with her youngest son. Don't believe that we weren't wanted in South Vietnam by these people. They were terrified by the communists. They were constantly asking us to stay, and fight with them against their enemies. They knew what would happen if we left.
Quite a craftsman, he's making a plow for farming. Once completed he would attach it to a waterbuffalo. For some reason it seemed that all waterbuffalos in vietnam hated Marines. It didn't matter what we were doing they would always square up as if they were going to charge. One actually did charge my company once, and had to be shot.
This is Nen's house with her youngest in the doorway. This is one of the nice house I mentioned earlier. Cement floors, wood doors, rugs, and clean. They were few and far between. Still no plumbing though. If they had an outhouse that would be modern during the 60's.
This ones a "beauty" as Steve Irwin the Crocman would say. He's waiting to be served up as a dinner feast. He's pretty big as you can see. One thing about the critters in Nam they were big. I had never seen an ant the size of the ants in Nam. Some were 3/4" to 1" inch in length. The leeches were the worst, if you traveled through a swamp area you'd have them hanging all over you by the time you got out.
