"The Landscape"
I never considered the landscape of Vietnam as breath taking, but there were many times I enjoyed seeing the views we had of the valleys below us. In this photo you can see a village edged in trees, and surrounded by rice paddies. Most of the landscape of Vietnam, outside the 2 major cities, Da Nang, and Saigon was similar to this photo.
This little village is high up in a jungle area in the mountians . You could go for miles in the jungle, and not see anything, or anyone, and then stumble across a little village like this. As with ever place we went we were very careful, these little villages are a perfect ambush spot for the enemy.
An abandon synagogue in the mist of the landscape. The war did havoc to the peoples life style. We would pass this building by each day on patrol never seeing anyone near it. Many times an area would be made a free-fire zone. Any non-military personel in the area would be considered the enemy. Even when the vietnamese people were moved out of an area to protect them, many would return. Some to aid the enemy, but others just because that was their home, and they would risk it.
A typical house in the a village. The structure in the foreground is a storage hutch. They would fill it with their rice harvest for sale, or later use. When we did a "Search & Destroy in an area where we were being shot at, we would burn not only their homes, but any food supplies they had stored. Many times they would resort to burying their supplies for themselves, and sometimes the enemy underground in large pots. These pots were sometimes 3-5 feet in height. We would use a grande to blow them up to stop their further use.
Terraced farming area near Da Nang no to far from the coast. This farmer used gravity irrigation for his little plantation. We would see this type of farming all over the highlands. Remember, no electricity, no plumbing, but this owner was still successful despite these things
